Final Phases of Key Electricity Infrastructure Projects Launched in Southern Afghanistan

In the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Al Hajj Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, senior cabinet officials, and provincial leaders of Kandahar, Zabul, and Helmand, the completion phases of three major electricity development projects were inaugurated.

During his address, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Al Hajj Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund emphasized the strategic significance of these projects in advancing national independence in electricity production, encouraging jobs, and strengthening the backbone infrastructure. He added that the projects would enable the whole transmission of energy from the Kajaki Dam to Kandahar, thereby electrifying residential communities and stimulating industrial development.

He also asserted that the Islamic Emirate is exerting serious efforts to utilize the domestic energy resources of the country, and he highlighted recent agreements with private firms to generate 250 megawatts of electricity from solar, wind, and gas power in several provinces.

Participants reiterated the importance of boosting local electricity generation, the completion of halted energy projects, and the provision of credible electricity supply to industry, commerce, and agriculture.

These projects consist of completion of the Qalat Substation in Zabul province, the Kandahar East Substation, and an extension of a 110-kilovolt transmission line that links the Kajaki power plant to the Kandahar East Substation.

The total investment is approximately one billion Afghanis. When developed, the projects will connect hundreds of thousands of new consumers to the grid, create job opportunities, and enable the Kajaki power plant to run at full transmission capacity, thereby enabling essential electricity needs for key economic drivers.
