Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, inaugurated two electricity generation projects in Herat Province: a 43.2-megawatt wind power project and a 5-megawatt solar power project.
Delivering remarks at the inauguration ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Baradar Akhund stated: “Today, we are witnessing the inauguration of two major wind and solar power projects in Herat. This is considered a significant achievement in the expansion, modernization, and self-sufficiency of the country's energy sector.” He further asserted that these projects will not only reduce Afghanistan’s reliance on imported electricity, but also contribute to environmental protection, the advancement of sustainable energy, and the promotion of modern technologies.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that Afghanistan has historically been dependent on imported electricity, with a substantial portion of the national budget allocated annually for its procurement. In his view, imported electricity is both costly and not a reliable or advantageous long-term solution.
He further remarked that the Islamic Emirate is committed to the optimal utilization of domestic resources in the electricity sector and is pursuing serious efforts in this direction. He explained that these projects will not only strengthen the nation’s electricity generation capacity, but will also facilitate economic development, job creation, the stimulation of domestic and foreign investment, and the expansion of infrastructure.
In conclusion, the Deputy Prime Minister assured all domestic and international investors that the Islamic Emirate has established favorable conditions for investment across various sectors in Afghanistan, particularly in the energy sector, and has ensured a transparent and secure environment. He urged investors to take full advantage of this opportunity. He also called upon the contracting companies involved in the projects to implement the work in accordance with approved standards.
It is notable that over $64 million is being invested in the 43.2-megawatt wind power project, and approximately $3.5 million in the 5-megawatt solar power project, by the private sector in partnership with Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat.
