H.E. Mawlawi Abdul Salam Hanafi, Deputy Prime Minister for Administrative Affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, met with Mr. Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and his accompanying delegation.
During the meeting, Mr. Grandi expressed his satisfaction with his visit to Afghanistan and discussions with Islamic Emirate officials. He emphasized the urgent need to support returnees and their reintegration, noting that UNHCR is committed to strengthening cooperation and assistance in these areas.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees praised the Islamic Emirate for effectively managing the large-scale forced expulsions of refugees from neighboring countries, calling it commendable. Mr. Grandi also noted that he has closely observed the refugee situation and will raise the matter with the relevant stakeholders.
In response, H.E. Mawlawi Abdul Salam Hanafi warmly welcomed Mr. Grandi and his delegation and expressed appreciation for the UNHCR’s cooperation regarding refugees.
The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted a sharp increase in forced expulsions from neighboring countries, with daily figures reaching 30,000 to 35,000 refugees at the Islam Qala border, causing considerable difficulties for the refugees.
He further stated that the Islamic Emirate welcomes any mechanisms that help resolve refugee issues and called for continued cooperation with the UNHCR and other aid organizations in areas such as permanent settlement, reintegration of returnees, and provision of additional assistance.
